According to the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress reading assessment, a staggering, 65% of all 8th grade Students with disabilities scored below proficient in reading (U.S. Department of Education, 2019). A call-to-action is needed to divert the literary crisis that is eminent in special education.
Effective and lasting changes will require a commitment to implement co-teaching practices with fidelity while also infusing evidence-based literary interventions and practices in the content areas.
